Assisted living is a level of care in senior living that offers daily support with the activities of daily living (ADLs).Assisted living is designed for seniors who can live independently with the support of a caregiver and generally not those who need intensive nursing care for chronic health concerns. Levels of assisted living for seniors can be as indirect as receiving a little help around the residence or as involved as help with bathing, dressing or eating.

A minimum age restriction of 55 is in place for most assisted living communities, but some have minimums of 60 or 62.

Assisted living provides senior adults with assistance in daily activities such as dressing, bathing or managing medications. It’s a good option for those seniors who are beginning to have health challenges.

The average monthly cost of assisted living is $5,850 in the United States according to Genworth Financial’s 2023 Cost of Care Survey. The difference between costs of communities can vary greatly depending on the state you live in.

Memory care provides daily structure and support for older adults living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. While there is no long-term cure for these memory-affective disorders, advanced memory care techniques have been proven to slow the progression of symptoms and provide a higher quality of life.

The average cost of memory care according to Genworth Financial’s 2023 Cost of Care Survey is $7,483 per month for a semi-private room in the United States. The cost of memory care varies by key factors such as a person’s health care needs, the state, amenities and the community itself and is more than the monthly rent for assisted living.

The main difference between assisted living and memory care is the level of care. Residents who live in assisted living communities may need help with specific activities of daily living, but they do not require 24-hour medical attention, which is offered in memory care. Memory care offers increased safety measures, specially trained staff and therapies to help people with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

A senior living community is a broad name for communities designed for independent living, assisted living and memory care for people at least 55 years old. These housing arrangements cater to the living requirements of older adults and can range from single-family homes and apartments to complex building facilities.

Activities of daily living (ADLs) encompass the routine personal tasks required to manage one’s basic physical needs. These include personal hygiene, eating, toileting, dressing and medication management.
