Parkinson’s disease (PD) is often referred to as an “older person’s disease” since it is often diagnosed in adults over the age of 60 – only 4% of all cases are detected before the age of 50. After Alzheimer’s, PD is the most common nerve degeneration condition among seniors. Did you know that approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD every year?
According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 90% of individuals with PD suffer from speech and voice disorders that negatively impact communication abilities – ranging from reduced volume to poor articulation. Additionally, PD patients can struggle with controlling repetitive motions that are commonly seen as hallmarks of the disease.
Mount Prospect Senior Living is now certified to offer a globally recognized Parkinson’s therapy program to help PD patients. LSVT Global pioneered two programs, LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG, which are innovative and clinically proven methods for improving communication and movement in individuals with PD. Mount Prospect is the first and only community in the area to obtain certification and offer LSVT therapy.
These programs are designed to improve bodily function and slow motor deterioration through intensive exercise and patient empowerment, while also increasing speech clarity and improving confidence. Participants can either choose to focus on LSVT BIG, LSVT LOUD or both, depending on needs and goals.
WHAT IS LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG therapy trains people with PD to use their body more normally. The therapy targets limb motor systems to increase speed of motion and sensory perception. Because LSVT BIG treatment is personalized to each person’s specific needs and goals, it can help regardless of the stage or severity of your condition.
LSVT BIG helps improve the discrepancy between what you feel you’re doing and what you’re actually doing, making you more confident, comfortable and empowered. Mount Prospect’s Occupational Therapist, Elizabeth Levine, is now certified in LSVT BIG and works with residents diagnosed with PD to maintain their strength and movement skills. Elizabeth has more than 12 years of experience and has worked with adults in a variety of settings including inpatient rehabilitation, home health and long-term care.
WHAT IS LSVT LOUD?
LSVT LOUD therapy is a specialized Parkinson’s voice treatment specifically designed to improve voice and speech for those living with the disease. Offered by a speech-language pathologist, LSVT LOUD helps participants increase tone of voice and improve intelligibility while focusing on precise, clear speech sounds. LSVT LOUD therapy uses systematic exercise to stimulate the speech motor system, improve vocal function and slow the progression of muscular deterioration. It helps participants develop and become comfortable with their voice.
WHAT DOES LSVT TREATMENT CONSIST OF?
- 16 high-intensity sessions: 4 days a week for 4 weeks
- Individual 1-hour session
- Daily assignments
- Daily carryover exercises
